Google’s Steve Vinter Joins CCSC Board

Community Charter School of Cambridge (CCSC) is pleased to announce that Steve Vinter, the Cambridge site director of Google, Inc., has joined the school’s Board of Trustees. A founding board member and currently Vice President of the Kendall Square Association, he brings deep ties to the local technology community and three decades of experience in the industry.

An Executive Committee member of Governor Deval Patrick’s Mass Tech Hub Collaborative, he chairs the Talent Working Group, one of whose priorities is to develop the pipeline of highly skilled workers by strengthening computer science and STEM education in the public schools. He also serves on the Board of Overseers at the Museum of Science and is a member of the STEM Advisory Committee at Citizen Schools.

CCSC Teacher Semifinalist for Mass. Teacher of the Year

Community Charter School of Cambridge science teacher Heather Haines has been selected as one of 11 semifinalists in the 2014 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Program. Each year, hundreds of teachers from public schools across the Commonwealth are nominated, and all go through a rigorous application and interview process, leading up to the final selection in early May. The winner will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year Program, and acts as an ambassador for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education during the 2013-14 school year. Ms. Haines and the other semifinalists will be recognized on June 13 at the annual Teacher of the Year award ceremony held at the State House in Boston.

Message from Head of School Regarding Tragic Events of Last Week

The following email went to the CCSC community on the evening of Sunday, April 21.

Dear CCSC Families,

We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn that one of our former students, Dzhokhor Tsarnaev, has been arrested in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings, the murder of an MIT police officer, and other crimes perpetrated during the daylong manhunt that brought our city to a standstill on Friday.

Dzhokhor attended CCSC in the 7th grade and 8th grade, from September 2005 through June 2007. He left in good standing to attend Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.

We grieve for the families and loved ones of all the victims. Our hearts are especially heavy thinking of the many other school communities affected, and particularly our friends at Neighborhood House Charter School, MIT, and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.

Mass. Charter Students Outpace Peers in Learning Growth

We are pleased and proud to share the results of an in-depth, multi-year study by education experts at Stanford University: across the Commonwealth, and especially in urban areas like Boston, charter school students are consistently and significantly exceeding their district peers in annual learning growth.

The study’s findings mirror the impressive growth achieved by students at CCSC. In 2012, for example, CCSC students led the state in their average learning growth from 8th to 10th grade in both math and ELA. In fact, CCSC was the only public school in the state (charter or district) to earn a growth rate of over 80% in both subjects. CCSC also earned a national EPIC Silver Award in 2011-12 for outstanding learning growth.
