"Raising Good Kids in Hard Times"
Robert Evans, Ph.D.
There is no harder job than being a parent. Nothing else touches so much of a person so deeply and there is no training for it. Today parents find it harder to know how to raise children well, how to resist negative influences in the media and culture, how to help foster strength and resilience in children. Rob Evans will outline key dilemmas in raising children and adolescents today and offer concrete suggestions for successful coping at home and school.
Dr. Evans is a clinical and organizational psychologist and the Executive Director of The Human Relations Service in Wellesley, Mass. A former high school and pre-school teacher, and a former child and family therapist, he has worked with schools and families for thirty years. He has consulted to nearly a thousand schools around the country. He is the author of many articles and two books, Family Matters: How Schools Can Cope with The Crisis in Childrearing, and The Human Side of School Change.

Cougars Stay Close
Pitcher-catcher combo helps cut lead

Wislens displayed his skills again, going 3 for 3 with a walk
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In only their second game in history, the CCSC Cougars trimmed a 5-0 Prospect Hill lead to 6-5 with an inning left. However, PHA was able to put one more on the board as it off the resilient Cougars, 7-5.
Again, Louis Bacci was sweet from the mound as he retired nine batters in seven innings. His counterpart, catcher Wislens Exilhomme, supplied three important hits (two singles, one double), four steals, three runs, and one RBI. Prime Time Morgan recorded a single, three stolen bases, and one run. Seventh grader Simon Mason also showed guts with a walk, a steal, and a run despite his broken hand.
"This was a huge improvement from last week," commented Coach Turner on his team's performance in comparison to its opening game. "We faced a tough pitcher with a good breaking ball. We just can't allow four unearned runs and expect to win."
CCSC miscalculations and unpredictability in the field led to many of the PHA runs and put more pressure on the batting lineup. The Cougars still managed to produce nine hits and kept up its focus until the final out. They'll have a chance to redeem themselves in a couple of weeks as they face PHA once more this season.
