Boys' Comeback Just Short

Garcia leads charge in closing minutes

December 15, 2006

Garcia took over down the stretch
DORCHESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore point guard Bayoan Garcia scored 8 points during a CCSC 16-2 run with under 9 minutes left to go, but first place Codman Academy (3-0) was able to hold off the visitors, 38-37.

Codman was ahead at halftime 25-11, thanks to a press and defense that forced 16 CCSC turnovers and held the Cougars to 35% shooting.  Behind strong interior play, the host Warriors continued to take advantage of their height as #52 Moifurary (17 points) and #42 Banks (8 points) converted lay-up after lay-up.

However, CCSC adjustments allowed the visitors to chip away in the 2nd half.  Codman led 31-17 with 9 minutes left, but CCSC continued to play hard.  Sophomore Chuck Tibbs made a key steal, sophomore Jude Odige converted a lay-up and then Garcia began to take over.  The point guard kept driving and scoring and the CCSC defense kept getting stops.

With 2:20 left and CCSC down 33-30, sophomore Michael Elysee drew the 4th charge of the game for the Cougars (two by sophomore Wale Wright and one by Garcia).  On the ensuing possession, Odige cleared out the right side, drove to the hole, drew a foul, and made the shot.  He tied the score at 33 with his free throw.  After Codman scored again, freshman Geo Morgan drew another foul.  He made both, but the second was waved off because of a lane violation.

After Codman scored one more time, Morgan converted a spectacular driving finger roll to make the score 38-37.  That was the last of the scoring for either team.  After a CCSC foul, Codman missed its free throw and Garcia was unable to connect on two jumpers as time expired.

Garcia scored 11 points and had six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block.  Odige tallied 13 points and Morgan chipped in with five points and six boards.  CCSC (0-2) travels to South Shore Charter on Sunday.  They play at 7:15 following the girls' game at 6 pm.
