DEAR at CCSC

Drop Everything and Read!

Welcome to the DEAR webpage.  You can use this page to access important documents, lists of approved books, and more.  Check back regularly as this page will be updated.

  Important Documents:
(Note:  these documents are current versions, but may change throughout the course of the semester and year.  Make sure you have the most current version of the documents you need.)
  • Course Requirements for DEAR and DEAR rubric -- this document explains DEAR's rules, procedures and expectations.
  • Preparing for DEAR -- this document walks students through DEAR Log set-up and other beginning of course procedures.
  • DEAR Log Rubric -- this document explains the criteria upon which student DEAR logs will be assessed when collected.
  • Pre-Approved DEAR books for 7th and 8th Grade students only.  This document will change as students suggest books and apply for others to become part of the list.  Check back often to see if your favorite book is on the list!
  • Pre-Approved DEAR books recommended for 9th, 10th, and 11th Grade students, but also permissable for 7th and 8th Grade students.  This document will change as students suggest books and apply for others to become part of the list. Check back often to see if your favorite book is on the list!  In addition, select a book from this list, courtesy of Great Books for High School Kids:  A Teachers' Guide to Books That Can Change Teens' Lives.  All book son this list are approved.
  • Switching DEAR books is not a simple process.  However, if a student is thoroughly unhappy with a book, he/she can complete the application and submit it to his/her teacher for approval.  While waiting for approval, the student must continue to read his/her book.
  • Students who complete their book should begin writing a formal review.  Use the Review Questions and Brainstorm sheet to begin drafting your Review.  Submit the completed sheet to your DEAR teacher.
  • Book Approval Request Form (or BARF) -- this form is to be used by students interested in reading a book not currently on the list.  Approved books may also be added to the compiled list, though not necessarily. The BARF must be approved before the student begins the book in DEAR.

(Yes, boys do DEAR as well and
yes, easier books are on the lists)
