Course 1: World Cultures and Literature

Welcome to your first year as a CCSC Humanities student. During the upcoming year, you will read many pages, write frequently, and search for answers to difficult questions. Throughout the entire year, you will be asked to think about the following question: "What can we learn about cultures from the stories that they tell?" To answer this question, we will begin by studying some of the earliest civilizations on earth, such as African tribal kingdoms, and will end our study with the fall of the Roman Empire.

Be prepared to work hard this year, to experience setbacks, occasionally feel frustrated, but ultimately reach your goals. Through weekly writing lessons and grammar instruction, you will learn to express your thoughts and ideas through clear, well organized writing. During the course of the year, you will write expository essays about novels or nonfiction articles, and you will also create your own folktales and memoirs. You will frequently be asked to present your work in front of the class, and all students are expected to participate in daily class discussions.

Seventh-graders are some of the most energetic, creative and determined people I know. I enjoy spending every day in the company of such spirited individuals and I'll do my best to support you and help you succeed.
