Course 1: 10th Grade Humanities
This course is a combined History and English/Language Arts class covering topics in the literature and history of The United States of America from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The course will include the following 4 units: Revolution and Revolt, Slavery and the Slave Trade, Race and Antebellum America, and Civil War and Westward Expansion. Each of these units will roughly correspond with the four academic quarters of the year. During the course, we will use several pieces of literature as a springboard for the study of themes central to the American Experience. These works will include In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez; Middle Passage, by Charles Johnson; The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass; Othello, by William Shakespeare; and The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane. In addition, we will use a variety of primary and secondary sources to supplement our reading list.
Course 2: Community Outdoor Leadership Program: Off the Beaten Path
This enrichment course will prepare students with the introductory skills necessary to enjoy living and traveling in the wilderness. We will emphasize exploration of the natural world and learn how to survive and thrive in that environment. Course topics will include mapping, cooking, first aid, plant and animal identification, and use of outdoor gear, all within the context of the great outdoors. The class will culminate in a 3-day overnight trip into the mountains of New Hampshire towards the end of October. All class participants MUST attend this culminating trip... don't worry, it will be FUN. Course open to Lower School Students.
