For Anna Pierrehumbert, teaching math is not just about learning facts and figures, it is about helping her students learn how to solve problems.
“Some students will use a lot of math in their future careers, while others won’t need much advanced mathematics,” she says. “What all students can take out of math is that it pushes them to learn material that is difficult for them, and it teaches them how to deal with a problem that they don’t know how to solve immediately.”
That’s part of the reason Ms. Pierrehumbert especially enjoys working with high school students: “Because they are beginning to think about who and what they want to do in their adult life.
Ms. Pierrehumbert, who grew up in Evanston, Illinois, holds a mathematics degree from Princeton University and earned a master’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
She says the most challenging aspect of teaching is helping students to learn the material now, while also helping them become independent learners in the future. Working with CCSC students makes that task enjoyable.
“The students are ready to learn,” she says. “They are ready to push themselves forward to achieve their goals for the future.”
