Caleb Hurst-Hiller’s favorite teacher when he was in high school was Mr. Myers, who taught 9th grade world history.
“The class was incredibly difficult,” says Mr. Hurst-Hiller, who recently earned a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. “He was a remarkable teacher. He balanced academic rigor and scholarly work with very cool, hands on simulations that made material accessible.”
It is that same approach Mr. Hurst-Hiller uses as Head of CCSC’s Upper School.
“The best part of my job is the time I get to spend interacting with students. Whether it’s in passing in the hallways or shaking hands at the front door or after they’ve been sent to my office for some reason, those exchanges, and the energy I derive from them, keeps me going, smiling, thinking critically, and loving this job.”
The Brown University graduate grew up in New York City and attended Central Park East II school in East Harlem. “I was one of few white students. But, as cheesy as it sounds, it wasn’t about race. The quality of the education was high and the teaching stellar,” he says. “The lessons learned there have certainly shaped who I am and what I have chosen to do with my life. At times, I sense that the hallways of CCSC feel the way they did back in the day at CPE. And, make no mistake, that’s a very good thing.”
Working at CCSC, he says, is very rewarding. “The students are incredible, unique. And I would not trade them for any other students out there.”
