Since she was in high school, Megan Hogan knew she wanted to be a teacher. As she enters her fifth year of teaching, she says she just can’t imagine herself doing anything else.
“My teachers made me want to become an educator,” says Ms. Hogan, who grew up in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and studied Sociology-based human relations at Connecticut College. Among the many teachers who inspired her to become an educator were Mr. Kennedy and Mrs. Stevens.
“Mr. Kennedy was very serious about academics and provided us, the students, with many tools to help us be successful,” Ms. Hogan says. “Despite his seemingly rough exterior, he had a great sense of humor and a great understanding of his students.” Mr. Kennedy taught 7th grade math. Mrs. Stevens, on the other hand, taught 11th grade English.
“Mrs. Stevens taught in a way which made English both interesting and accessible to a student like me,” Ms. Hogan says. “Mrs. Stevens created a classroom environment where all students felt comfortable to explore and express their thoughts and opinions about literature.”
Ms. Hogan tries to channel a little bit of both Mr. Kennedy and Mrs. Stevens while teaching the seventh grade, her favorite grade level. “I enjoy the energy of this grade level. As an educator, the seventh grade students keep me on my toes and make me laugh.”
Simply put, Ms. Hogan loves her job.
“I blame the students, the faculty, and the staff,” she says.
