About Ms. Kirstein

Ms. Kirstein’s aspiration of teaching can be traced all the way back to elementary school.

“I remember in first grade writing that I wanted to be an English teacher,” she says. “I was raised in a multilingual environment and have always been fascinated by other languages and cultures. Teaching English language learners was a natural career choice.”

In addition to a bachelor’s degree in English from UMass-Boston, Ms. Kirstein has a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Chicago, a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from UMass-Boston, and a doctoral degree in education.

“Since college, I looked for jobs where I could be involved with teaching in some way,” she says. “In particular, I enjoy working with non-traditional students and finding ways to explain U.S. language and culture to them.”
She has taught in Brockton, Framingham, Somerville, and Dedham schools and also worked for the state Department of Education.

Ms. Kirstein was attracted to CCSC’s commitment to student achievement.
“To me, CCSC is a living demonstration of how to teach for equity.”
