Peter Herbst loves mathematics.
As a student, one of his favorite high school classes was Calculus. Even his favorite book , “The man who loved only numbers,” by Paul Hoffman, is about math.
“The book combines interesting math problems with an even more interesting narrative of Paul Erdos, a famous mathematician,” says Mr. Herbst.
So perhaps it is no surprise that the East Hampton, Connecticut native followed the “family profession” and became a math teacher. He knew in high school that he wanted to be a math teacher.
“Both my parents were teachers,” Mr. Herbst says. “My grandfather and my uncle were both superintendents. Basically every adult in my life growing up was involved in education. My brother is a teacher.”
Now in his fifth year of teaching, Mr. Herbst, a Wagner College alum who holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Boston College, says he really enjoys teaching high school freshmen.
“Ninth grade is a critical year for high school students,” he says. “The best part about teaching is watching kids react when they ‘get it’. Working at CCSC is rewarding because I get to work with an amazing group of students, faculty, and administrators.”
