About Mr. Roebuck

One of Mr. Roebuck’s favorite teachers was his fifth grade science and social studies teacher, Mr. Maher.

“The thing that really made him great was the way he built relationships with students," he says. "He was fun and engaging but he also got to know his students and tried to make sure they felt comfortable and supported in his class."

Still, Mr. Roebuck was drawn to a career in education not as much by the inspiring example Mr. Maher had been to him, he says, but more so by a growing awareness of the iniquities that exist between schools and the students they serve.

“My eyes were first opened to the reality of generational poverty and social reproduction in an urban education class during my senior year of college, and over the next two years I saw what this looks like through the eyes of my wife, who was teaching in a school that was really struggling," he says. "After hearing stories of the challenges facing her students and the problems and dysfunctions overwhelming her school, I resolved to join my wife in education and work to find ways to promote educational justice."
Mr. Roebuck, who has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Boston College and a bachelor’s degree in biological anthropology from Harvard, was drawn to CCSC, he says, because of the school’s commitment to high expectations and high quality learning.

“I knew that it had a track record of success, and I wanted to be a part of that," Mr. Roebuck says. "Other teachers talked to me about how collaborative and collegial a culture the school has, which was appealing to me."

As a visitor to the school, he was struck by both how composed and focused the students were and by how engaging and talented the teachers were.

"This was a place where students were learning," he says. "And it was a place where I could learn how to improve my own teaching and how to create a highly effective school.”
